From the valley station at Unter dem Birg (1400 m), follow the path beneath the cableway and across the Ärtelenbach into the forest, crossing a bridge over the Engstligen where an information board marks the via ferrata. Climb steeply through grass and scree to the right of the lower waterfall and a dry streambed to reach the start of the ferrata on an obvious ramp at about 1530 m (30 min).

The route follows the rocky ramp of the Chäligang, now fitted with a secure cable and iron rungs replacing the old chains. After a steep initial section, the path traverses across the wall into a basin above the lower Engstligen waterfall, a good rest spot. Past a wooden bench with a visitors' book, it turns right through a grassy, rubble-filled gully toward a ridge, then continues traversing right to join the hiking trail near P. 1810 by the upper waterfall. From there, hikers can descend or continue upward past three alp huts and over a small bridge to Engstligenalp (1965 m, 2½ hrs total).

From the top of the via ferrata (ca. 1800 m), either climb the marked path northeast to the upper cable car station at Engstligenalp, or descend directly on a mountain trail beneath the uppermost waterfall, zig-zagging down to the valley station at Unter dem Birg.
