From the Haldi cable car station (1082 m), follow the road gently up to Süessberg (1219 m), then climb a steep forest path to the clearing at Gampelen alp (1484 m). Continue zigzagging up via Bärenfallen to the Schwarz Grat saddle (1993 m), then follow white-blue-white markings east into a rocky basin before ascending scree to the via ferrata's start near the base of Bälmeten (approx. 2170 m).

The route opens with a near-vertical wall of compact rock rated K4, followed by tiered rocky terrain and an exposed traverse. Steel cables then lead steeply up to the large Bälmetentor arch, from where a steep chimney gains the north-west ridge. The ridge, marked white-blue-white with occasional protected sections, leads to the summit of Bälmeten (2415 m).

Descend east along the Bälmeter Grätli ridge to the Grätli-Sattel (2252 m), then head northeast to Butzenboden below Hoch Fulen, zigzagging down to Stafelalp (1788 m) where refreshments are available. Continue past the Ober Oberfeld hay barns onto the grassy ridge between Schattdorfer Berg and Riedertal, then follow tracks back down to Haldi (1082 m). A shorter alternative descends the chain-equipped north ridge (T4, about 2 hr 30 min).
